Wake Up Critical Thinkers!

It is time for us to start using our brains, wake up to some realities, and seek some truth. I am a high school special education teacher who has started to realize our kids lack some very necessary skills to be effective in today’s troubling times. I am not just talking about kids in special education, but in general education too. This is not a recent trend; it is the first time that I have noticed the magnitude of the problem. One of the most important skills that is lacking is critical thinking. I am referring to the kind of thinking that brings us to a point of revealing truth, lies, and realities. Hopefully, critical thinking leads us to be a part of positive change or at least share what we have discovered through research with others. I believe that the people in our country have fallen into a huge snare because we are blindingly move in the direction of masses like lemmings off a cliff. In this article I am going to focus on one of many areas that we need to explore.

Let us take a look at our state of health regarding food, because health is holistic and not just about what we eat.

Most Americans live a sedentary lifestyle, eat the standard American diet, or have not dealt with trauma, mental health, self-care, which are all factors for weight gain or weight loss. Unresolved issues, toxins, and stress keep your body from being able to digest food and effectively absorb nutrients even if you are eating healthy foods. We have tossed out critical thinking when it comes to our health. Statistically:

2 out of 3 Americans over the age of 20 are reported as overweight or obese.

Let’s think about why this is and what we are doing about it. I have even said it myself, “Why is it so hard to lose weight, get in shape, and feel well?” The answer, because we live in a system that is built for Americans to be unhealthy on purpose. Don’t agree? Why are even the healthy options at most dine in or fast food restaurants over portioned and lacking in nutrients? Why aren’t we using organically grown ingredients, grass fed beef, healthy grains, and raw, healthy dairy? Because it doesn’t keep us sick and our food industry wealthy.

Most people do not take the time to think about where their food comes from, how far it travels before it gets to our plate, how it is processed, what chemicals are used to preserve or increase flavor, and what it is doing to our bodies. Many don’t realize that the food being served to us is intentionally prepared to keep us from feeling full, so we go back for more. If our bodies are getting the nourishment and nutrients we need in a meal, we eat less, crave the food that brings us nourishment, increase our digestion and gut health, it is healthy for our brain, and heals us. Why do we not investigate these things and question them? Because we don’t want to change, we will be inconvenienced, feel uncomfortable, or feel that all things that taste good will no longer be allowed because we are “dieting.” Dieting is my least favorite word by the way, and not just because I don’t like to do it. More on that in a future article.

Okay, so what can we do about it? We need to research, watch videos, watch documentaries, read books, and study. If you are a critical thinker, the things I just mentioned are what you do to reveal truth. That is what we want, right? We want to discover the truth and live according to that instead of do what others simply suggest and we accept it as truth because it allows us to keep doing what we are doing and keep us from leaving our comfortable and convenient way of thinking and lifestyle. When you start investigating resources, look at several and not just ones that come from one standpoint. Look at both sides of arguments and realize that some information may seem like it is factual but may be misleading so check on your sources of information.

If the road ahead seems overwhelming and difficult, take heart. I will do as much research as is possible within the constraints of my time and provide you with as many facts and resources I can muster. I will also commit to be a partner in peeling back the many layers of deception with you and hope you will be a part of finding the truth. I also hope we can encourage one another on this journey to not only find the truth but start to live it as it is revealed. Please join me as we serve each other in this way. Thank you.
